How well do we really understand what our horse is experiencing?
When they seem depressed, and they are suffering with an illness or a distressing condition, could their depression be due to pain, or could it be due to something else? Maybe they are picking up on the conversations and heavy energy surrounding them; worse, they may even be aware that their life hangs in the balance.
It is so important in these situations that we really decipher exactly what is going on, and AC is an amazing tool for doing just this.
For 5 ½ years we had an amazing pony on loan. Silver brought so much happiness, joy and fun into my daughter, Lauren’s life.

Although I could never really repay his gifts to us, I do like to think that the information he shared with me in the summer of 2019, helped to save his life.
With my daughter at university, Silver had gone back to his loving owners a couple of years before. But we stayed in close touch, and Lauren was visiting him whenever she was able.
Then, in summer 2019, Silver developed a golf size melanoma in his sheath. He had suffered with melanomas for years – around his throat and underneath his tail, but they had never bothered him like this one. He was in pain and his sheath was badly swollen. In addition it was causing some nasty infections. He had been put on strong painkillers and antibiotics, but with surgery not an option due to its size and position, his future looked uncertain. The vet had stated that if he was her horse she would be looking to have him pts.
Two weeks on from this, Silver certainly seemed to be a pony who had lost his joy for life.
He was most certainly not himself, and quite understandably it seemed that his depressed mood was the result of pain. As he had always been a very stoic pony then the concern was that he was feeling a high level of pain.
It was agreed that I would go over and see him, have a chat, and try and establish what it was that Silver himself wanted. Was he ready to go, or did he have a bit more fight in him? I would also give him some reiki healing.

Arriving at the yard, it was indeed distressing to witness the change in Silver’s demeanour. Even our arrival hardly warranted any interest. He seemed oblivious to our presence. This was not a Silver I had ever encountered before, and it was just heart-breaking to witness. I totally understood why everyone considered him to be suffering.
But as I started to meditate and let my energy converge with his, I was totally shocked by what he revealed. It seemed that it wasn’t pain that was making him depressed, but the possibility that his life hung in the balance. He made it very clear that he was aware that he may be put to sleep, and he was just not ready for this yet. It wasn’t his time! His refusal to eat his bucket food and treats that were offered to him would be sign enough that life was unbearable. And he wasn’t there yet!
As I recounted all this to his owner standing outside his stable, the tears streamed down her face. She felt immense relief that he was not prepared to give up the fight.
Following this revelation, I proceeded to let the reiki flow through me. Putting my hands gently on Silver, I let the reiki flow for as long as it was needed. It may have been 20 or 30 minutes later, but Silver started to yawn excessively. He must have yawned about ten times. I felt a huge release, and it seemed the appropriate time to end the session. There seemed to be a change in Silver’s energy. Was it my imagination, or did he seem more interested in us and his surroundings? There felt a definite change. I hoped I was right.
The next day we received the most amazing news.
Silver had spent most of the day cantering around his field. Our joyful pony was back!
A few days later, his spirits were still soaring, so Lauren took him out for a little ride.
The change in him could not be denied. He was without doubt a pony who was now full of beans – more like a four year old than an 18 year old. He jogged the whole ride, and Lauren had to work her hardest to keep him calm and under control.

Eventually, the melanoma would disappear for good, but that is a story for another day.
Silver continued to live for another three years until colic claimed his life. Thankfully, every day of his life henceforth was graced with his joyful presence. Never again would depression rear its ugly head!
This pony had a lot to teach us about joy (there is a chapter devoted to this in my forthcoming book), but he had also delivered a huge lesson in the importance of good communication. Without it, he may have left us much sooner!
