“You can’t solve problems with the same level of consciousness that created them”
Albert Einstein
When our animals have a negative association with something, we may spend a lot of time re-training, or using desensitization techniques to try and help them perceive it more positively. But there is also another way.
Animal communication and reiki healing have come to my rescue many times, and I have lost count of how many animals have been helped to perceive things differently using these practices.
A recent occurrence is a case in point.
Having been diagnosed with an infected fly bite, or possibly Phlebitis, Jazz’s huge swelling on the inside of her right thigh was to be treated with antibiotics, anti-inflammatories (2 syringes per day), and cold-hosing.
She is typically fidgety at the hose, so it was no surprise to find myself focusing hard at directing the water on to her swollen leg, at the same time as avoiding being trodden on, as she swung from side to side.
After the hose, came the dreaded syringe! Jazz is a clever horse and the sight of a syringe instantly tells her that she is about to have a horrible tasting liquid forced down her throat. Nevertheless, I wasn’t quite prepared for her adverse reaction – the most dramatic response to date. Cantering around me in circles, while threatening to rear, I was doing my utmost to keep calm, and just wait for her to settle down. It took a couple of minutes, whilst her field mate Rosie (the ultimate mother) tried to take it for her.
Eventually, job done, Jazz wandered off in a sulk, affronted that I was forcing such horrible things upon her.

Walking over to her and holding out a few horse nuts, I was making my apologies. But she was having none of it. As she walked away, I felt a stab of rejection in my heart.
On reflection, I was a little surprised at how adversely Jazz had reacted. We have a fantastic bond, and she normally has a very good understanding of when I am trying to help her. Where had I gone wrong?
It is hard to say to be honest, as I had taken care to keep my energy calm, grounded and gentle, but as we had to continue this for the next few days, I clearly needed to adopt a very different approach.
One thing I can’t be accused of is lack of creativity. The things I have witnessed over the last decade have really taught me to think outside the box, and this was no exception.
So as I drove up to the yard that night, I asked Tiffany, my beloved horse in spirit if she could help in some way. This may sound crazy, but Tiffany has come to my rescue so many times, I don’t even doubt it.
I also meditated for ten minutes, and telepathically sent calming messages and reiki healing to Jazz, explaining why these procedures were needed and how they could help.
Even I was amazed at the difference. It was hard to comprehend that this was even the same horse. She didn’t move once with the cold hosing. When I walked into her stable with her headcollar, even though she knew that the syringe was about to materialize, she stood by my side very relaxed and chilled as she accepted a little reiki. As I popped the syringe into her mouth, there was no reaction; not even the slightest movement of her head.
But it was her actions after all this that really gave me a buzz, for as I walked away from her stable she popped her head over the stable door, beseeching me to come back over. There was no ignoring her big, soulful eyes. As I walked back towards her, she nickered softly. She stood quietly with me in silent contemplation, before returning to her net of haylage. As I moved away, she called me back again. Deep in my soul I could feel the words she wanted to express. She now understood that I was doing my utmost to help her. “Yes, we are deeply connected” she was telling me. “How could you ever doubt it?”

This was not a one-off wonder. For the next few days I carried on using these methods, and Jazz continued to be the model horse, always showing me deep regard and inviting the deep connection afterwards.
Sometimes we have to do horrible things to our animals. But when they understand why, and we are held in such deep reverence as this, then it can become a beautiful process instead of a negative one.
Jazz has been a master teacher for me, and she continues to deliver her lessons. There is so much more to our horses than we could ever perceive. We have much to learn!
